In our “other” life, we operate a small safety consultancy (smartersafety.com.au), so being aware of your safety comes natural to us.
Please glance through the links below so you are aware of what is here in case you need to refer to something during your stay.
CAMP RUFFY OFF GRID POWER MANAGEMENT
ELECTRICITY OVERVIEW
Please remember we are off grid so no power supply from any power lines. We generate all of our own electricity using solar and a mini hydro plant that puts that generated energy into a battery bank. Ours is a great little system, however it does have limitations.
ELECTRICITY IN SUMMER
During summer, Camp Ruffy Creek experiences a much lower water flow than usual, and that reduces the ability of our mini hydro plant to generate its normal output, often there can be no power generated. Luckily, summer is the ideal season for solar (unless there is zero cloud cover) and we generally enjoy full batteries at dusk every night.
Unfortunately, the battery power we have at dusk is all we have, and it has to last all night. If it reduces to our emergency trigger point, the generator will start and run until the battery bank is 95% full, but it can be very noisy to some.
Please minimise the use of electricity during your stay. Caravans need to be self-sufficient (please do not plug in) and definitely no charging electric cars as this alone will destroy our batteries. There are car charging stations nearby at both Avenel and Euroa. We have an inverter that converts our battery power to 240V, and Resort Ruffy is 240V wired throughout.
ELECTRICITY IN WINTER
During winter, Camp Ruffy Creek can be something of a raging torrent, and it generates electricity 24/7 which is great because the Camp Ruffy morning mist in winter sometimes doesn’t clear until 4pm and that can occur day after day. Electric heaters and electric blankets are not permitted as these will quickly destroy our batteries. There are three fire boxes and plenty of firewood available.
